Google Maps mashups have come a long way in 3 years. Collectively, these mashups have been widely recognized as game changing web concepts that have helped to bring geographic relevancy to millions of points of information. Back on March 13th of this year I asked you to drop me a line to tell me about an award or recognition your Google Maps mashup has received. Thanks to everyone that answered my call! UEFA 2008 Google Map for Fans

June 3rd, 2008 · No Comments · Google Maps, Maps, Mashups

I am currently sitting in the Plaine de Plainpalais in Geneva, Switzerland. Huge television screens and a large number of beer tents have been erected in the square for the start of the 2008 European Football Championship.

The tournament, which is being hosted by Austria and Switzerland kicks-off this Saturday but there is already a huge amount of excitement and anticipation about the competition. On Sunday, as I drove around Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), all the bridges were covered with flag-waving Portuguese fans who had heard that the team would be driving past from the airport.

Google have of course produced a Google Map for the occasion. The Google Fan Map shows all the stadiums being used in the competition, the tournament schedule and details about each of the teams.

It is also possible to turn on a Panoramio layer to view photos, and a Bars / Clubs layer which tags thousands of bars throughout Europe. The side-panel of the map includes a news section which I presume is presenting an RSS feed of the tournament from Google News.

The map is available in all of these countries, UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Russia, Poland, Austria, Switzerland and Sweden.

As well as the Fan Map Google is celebrating Euro ‘08 with dedicated YouTube channels where you can upload and share videos.

Ireland Google Maps Mashup Roundup

May 28th, 2008 · No Comments · Google Maps, Maps, Mashups

Northern Ireland Food Review

The Northern Ireland Food Review is a useful tool for finding restaurants in Northern Ireland. To start a search you simply enter your postcode, how far you wish to travel and what type of food you are looking for and all the nearby food outlets are tagged on a Google Map.

A shaded circle is also shown on the map indicating the distance you are prepared to travel. Clicking on a tagged restaurant opens an information window with a photograph and the address of the restaurant. There is also a link to a review of the restaurant.

Ireland Reserve Defence Forces
Ireland Reserve Defence Forces is a map of army and navy reserve units. The map shows all three territorial brigade areas in Ireland, with the ability to zoom in and get contact information and directions to each individual unit. The units themselves are indicated on the map by the unit’s shield.

Town and Country

The Town and Country website has produced a nice Google Map showing all the bed & breakfasts in Ireland.

Clicking on a tagged B&B will take you to a review of that establishment. Each individual review also includes a small Google Map showing the exact location of the bed and breakfast.

Casualty Figures
Casualty Figures is a map showing the number of patients awaiting hospital admission in Irish hospitals. 35 hospital locations in Ireland are shown on the map. The figures are for 2005-2006 so the map won’t help you to discover the present number of patients awaiting hospital admission but can help you find a hospital in Ireland.
