CityGML has officially become an OGC Standard. This is great news for those of us who are tying to work with and exchange 3D models of buildings and cities. I’m still a CityGML newbie, but the more I look at the standard and learn about it, the more I’m excited about what we’ll be able to do in the future with BIM and GIS. Moving data back and forth between BIM and GIS is almost impossible today, but hopefully this is a huge step forward. You can view the standard at this link (after accepting that wacky OGC license).

The VP Nominations on Google Maps
August 20th, 2008 · No Comments · GIS and GEO technology, Maps
Veepstakes
Have the Vice President selection committees of the Obama and McCain campaigns thought about using Google Maps and Google Trends to help them decide on their candidate? Mibazaar has put together a Google Map of Google Trends and possible VP candidates which might provide some help.
This map shows the top 10 cities in the United States where search for a given candidate is originating from. This list can be filtered by date and individual US State. The mashup also shows you links to news articles which may have caused a spike in the search for a particular candidate.
If Obama wants Virginia then Tim Kaine might be his man. Kaine seems to be the most searched for candidate in Virginia. However that’s hardly surprising as he is the Governor of Virgina. If, however, Obama wants Colorado perhaps he should go for Chuck Hagel or Kathleen Sebelius, they seem to be the only Democrats being searched for in this state.

The Tube Panorama
August 20th, 2008 · No Comments · GIS and GEO technology, Maps

The average speed of a Tube train in London is 33 km per hour (20.5mph) - including station stops. This makes capturing a panorama on the Tube tricky due to the movement of the train. Luckily these average figures don’t really tell the full story and the Tube is often subject to delays and periods of unexplained stoppages in tunnels.
Thus during a particular long delay between Mornington crescent and Camden Town we were able to fully assemble our panoramic rig and capture the resulting panorama.
