This brief mail came to me this AM from Vincent Tao who leads many of Microsoft’s mapping and GIS initiatives in China -
CCTV (China Central Television) is the largest Chinese Broadcasting Company who owns the exclusive Olympics broadcasting rights for China. We just released the first version of VE integrated with CCTV Olympics site for ‘Euro Soccer Game 2008’. For the next phase, VE will be integrated with CCTV for the Olympics events.

On May 28th & 29th, several thousand developers descended upon the Moscone Center in San Francisco to participate in Google I/O, our largest developer event to date. Among those were hundreds of geo developers, and I felt fortunate to be able to meet folks in person that I assumed would just be GMail-buddies-for-life: Jesse Kocher from walkscore, Alex Neth from cribq.com, Andres Ferrate of Mapdango, Ken Hoetmer of lonely planet, Nianwei Liu of Charlotte Zoning Maps, Kevin MacDonald of Pentura, Jeffrey & Dave Martin of 360cities, and many more. Hopefully those of you who couldn’t come out here for I/O will be joining us at one of our international Developer Days (?alguien quiere celebrar en Mexico City conmigo?).
Until then, you can watch all the I/O presentations in full Youtube glory. The Maps API and KML presentations are in the player below, and the full list of the 70+ presentations (with some links to slides) is here. You can also check out our photo album from the event (I’ve never felt so dwarfed by a marker before), and the panoramas that Jeffrey took at the event (I’ve never met a chocolate fountain I didn’t like :).

Visualisation is key to our understanding of spatial data, a fact that large companies and organisations realise which is why perhaps the Post Office haven’t released a map of the recent round of post office closures.
They have however published a document entitled ‘Network Change Programme Area Plan Decision Booklet, London’. CASA, home of digital urban, has gone through the document and geo-coded each closure location allowing it to be visualised:

In May 2007, following a national public consultation, the Government announced a range of
proposed measures to modernise and reshape the network of Post Office® branches. Local public consultation was carried out on the proposed closures with approximately 27,600 pieces of correspondence received and 79 meetings held with customers and their representatives. This resulted in the saving of only 7 post offices with 155 in the London area now earmarked for closure.
At CASA we have mapped them and uploaded them to our new MapTube service to view. The results are interesting, its all well and good reading a slightly hidden document on the post office website but when you go through all the closures, geo-code them and plot them on a map the impact is clear:
The red dots indicate current post office locations with the blue markers confirmed closures. You can type in your postcode using the Google Search at the bottom left of the map to see if your local branch is closing.

Current public documents from the Post Office can be found here.

US National Tennis Court Mashup:

Want a great way to find a tennis court anywhere in the US? TennisMaps.com comes to life with a mashup that actually took me a bit off guard when I went to review it. I wasn’t expecting the overwhelming coverage of courts per city, the amount of detail for each court or the services you can interact with for each court. You’ve got driving directions, ratings, court details and info about nearby toilets, restaurants and hotels. Quick options to link-to or print are also built in. My only suggestion is to create a way to quickly go back to the US view with all ball markers showing.. Even if you’re not a tennis buff, take a peek at this one, it’s pretty well done.
MyTopo: Browse US/Canada Topo Maps!:

Topographic (topo) maps are maps that show detail about natural and man-made features in an area. A hill or mountain is represented by contour lines drawn out to show terrain. Structures are labeled or their shapes are drawn out. In addition to practical planning uses, topo maps are pretty fun and almost geo-romantic to explore. MyTopo.com lets you browse these topo maps for anywhere in the US and Canada..
